  1. riscos.org t-shirt and mousemat design competition

    riscos.org is running a competition to design a t-shirt or mousemat to publicise the platform. Winners will receive the finished product plus any other prizes donated by companies. The competition closes on 1st August and then the winners will be decided by a vote on the RISCOS.org website.

    Junk email is becoming more and more of a problem. Internet users waste huge amounts of time and money downloading this unsolicited and unwanted e-mail. Anyone whose e-mail address is on a web page or newsgroup posting will be able to sympathise with this ever growing problem.

    MailScout provides RISC OS users with the ability to scan their e-mail boxes and remove UNWANTED mail before downloading WANTED email. User defined filters allow you to automatically flag 'suspect' emails for deletion based on values in the mail's "FROM", "TO" and "SUBJECT" headers.

  3. Cerilica RiScript updated, Vantage on Omega

    • Release of RiScript v4.15
      This version brings even more powerful PDF reading capabilities such as handling of CIE colour models and Euro symbol support. RiScript now also automatically embeds any Type1 font data that may already be present for more accurate document text.   5. Vantage - The Book; in German

    The Vantage manual is now available in a German revised version directly from a4 - computer. It is priced at EUR10 as an 'addon' to the software but also available separately at EUR35. Please add EUR2 for delivery in Germany, otherwise at cost.

  6. 100Mbit network cards

    NET100 is a 10/100BaseT full/half duplex network card available for Risc PC and A7000 series machines, commissioned by a partnership of Stuart Tyrrell Developments, RComp and CTA/RiscStation.

    The interface is fully FLASH upgradeable and allows users to add almost 500KBytes of their own modules to the FLASH memory if they wish. An asymmetrical 16K packet buffer reduces receive overruns and can cut interrupt overheads by a factor of 3 times when compared to cards with smaller buffers, leading to favourable results in independent speed tests.

  8. Grapevine instant Internet communication

    R-Comp are pleased to announce Grapevine, an Instant Messaging application for RISC OS users which has been under development for some time.

    Instant messaging allows you to communicate in real-time with friends, family and colleagues directly from your computer. You go online to check e-mail, or browse the web, and can see which of your friends or contacts are also online.

    Grapevine initially supports Microsoft's "MSN" service and the more chat-room orientated IRC. Grapevine is designed to allow you to have a single program for all your instant communication, and has been designed to be expandable for more protocols and additional functionality.

  9. VirtualAcorn emulator updated

    VirtualAcorn were at the Wakefield Show with version 1.20 of VirtualA5000, which is faster than previous versions and includes a number of other improvements, including better keyboard handling, a new version of HostFS, improved disc build, higher screen resolutions, extended manuals and third party plug in support.

    The VirtualAcorn Universal Printer Driver allows the emulated RISC OS to print to any Microsoft printer on any interface.

  10. Extension ROM for RiscStation R7500

    Simtec would like to announce the availability of re-programmable extension ROMs for the RiscStation R7500 computer.

    These Flash ROMs fit into the empty third column ROM socket on the motherboard and are pre-programmed with Simtec's new Snafu flash programming utility. This utility allows the user to programme the 2Mbyte ROM with any of their own modules using a simple drag and drop interface.

    Using this extra chip, frequently used, new, or replacement modules can be placed into ROM. Alternatively, using a utility such as Resources, a complete boot sequence can be inserted into resourceFS which can be run at power on - ideal for a discless network system.

    • ArcEm, Archimedes Emulator

      ArcEm is an Archimedes emulator (Acorn A400 series machines). It works on RISC OS, Unix (including Linux, Mac OS X, FreeBSD) and Microsoft Windows. ArcEm is available in binary versions for RISC OS, Win32 and x86 Linux. Source is available for porting to other platforms and improvement. ArcEm is released under the GPL.

    • Gems, a new pd game

      Gems involves the gathering of groups of gems from the play area. This is done by clicking on adjacent gems so that they swap positions to create a group of 3 or more gems, which disappear, give you points, and are replaced by more gems falling from above.

    • Natter, instant messaging client

      Converts Photoshop and Paint Shop Pro brush files into a form suitable for use in Photodesk. There are thousands of Photoshop brushes freely available on the net and this application gives Photodesk users easy access to them.

    • Vingt et Un, desktop card game

      This is a WIMP version of the well known card game (also known as Pontoon and Twenty One), and is playable on RISC OS versions above 3.5. A sample version which was made available before Christmas is still available from this site. The full version is available on CD.

    • Jclean v3.10

      Fix JPEG images. This version includes improved error management and a slight rewrite to ensure it does not fail any more on long filepaths up to 255 characters.     • Locate v0.65

      File-find utility for RISC OS, based on the tools available on other platforms. It can search for files based on any file attribute and file contents. Locate can now act as a Find plugin for the Filer under RISC OS Select, meaning that it can be started from a Filer menu and search in the selected objects. Multiple paths can be searched in one operation.
