General News

  1. *.acornsearch.com offline

Due to a disk failure acornsearch.com, the popular search engine and file archive, has been lost. The search engine scripts remain and Acornsearch will hopefully be revived eventually.

autobuilder.acornsearch.com, which generated nightly builds of gccsdk, Nettle etc, has also been lost and there are currently no plans to regenerate it.

  2. RISCOS.org design a T-shirt competition

The closing date for entries to the RISCOS.org t-shirt design competition is now 1st September. For details visit: http://www.riscos.org/cgi-bin/artcl?a=tshirt

  3. New Photodesk tutorials available

The Vermilion Sands Photodesk resource site has been updated:

    • New tutorial on basic image sharpening
    • New tutorial on 'real' unsharp masking: high-quality image enhancement
    • Graphics news of interest to Photodesk users

    Visit the site at http://www.photodesk.iconbar.com/.

Both the tutorials use example pictures of the Moon taken with a digital camera, and show how to enhance them. The section on 'real' unsharp masking explains how to use Photodesk's basic image manipulation features to create this powerful technique, which can give much better results than the program's built-in unsharp mask facility.

Commercial News

  1. The '4D RPI' - Fourth Dimension RISC OS Programming Initiative

In a very successful scheme 'CJE RPI' from September 2000 to July 2001, CJE Micro's supplied over 40 Risc PCs at subsidised rates to programmers to promote RISC OS Programming. The Fourth Dimension (a sister company to CJE Micro's) has now secured enough computers to restart this scheme, at lower prices and no VAT to pay!

Not all RISC OS programmers have Risc PCs but for those that do, a second computer can be very helpful for checking compatibility with various RISC OS versions, network compatibility etc. 4D do need suitable evidence of programming/hardware projects underway or planned. Please send details to 4d@cjemicros.co.uk marking your e-mail "RISC OS Programming Initiative".

Base '4D RPI' Risc PC spec: Risc PC 610, RISC OS 3.50, 16MB & 1MB VRAM, NO Hard Disc, Keyboard or mouse; GBP45 plus GBP10 UK mainland carriage. Details are available at http://www.cjemicros.co.uk/4drpi/.

PD/Shareware News

  1. New software summary

    • AWSwitch, improved anti-aliasing in ArtWorks

Normally, ArtWorks files are rendered using 16 levels of anti-aliasing. In most circumstances, in particular while editing an illustration, this is quite adequate. However, for presentation purposes and for high quality bitmap output, it is desirable to have more accurate anti- aliasing. The free AWSwitch utility allows you to choose between 16, 64 and 128 levels of anti-aliasing in ArtWorks and other applications that render ArtWorks files.

    • Confocal, database for microscope

A very early implementation of a database for microscopy. In a confocal microscope you can scan cells or tissue for various different stains and detect things inside cells. However, the microscope has various settings like laser strength and also the stains used to detect the cells are varied. Confocal allows you to search for your information.

    • Labbook, lab-book database

A lab-book database that allows you to search for experiments etc. If you are asked about the data that is referenced inside your lab books from distant experiments you can search for the info. This is a very early app and the author is looking for feedback for future versions.

    • Locate v0.70

A Desktop utility to search for files, directories and applications meeting a given set of criteria.
