General News

MakeModes - Revised Documents

Revised versions of the Manual and the Application Note for MakeModes are available from: <http://www.wattys.fsnet.co.uk/sof.htm#mamo>. Both are available in Impression, EasiWriter, Ovation Pro, and HTML formats.

These revisions are based closely on the former Acorn documents authored by Dean Murphy in 1994. They aim to guide users over the main bug in MakeModes and to make the instructions clearer. RISCOS Ltd support the issue of these revised documents and will in due course make them available from their server.

A mapping between RISC OS and the Unicode character set has been added to the collection of character sets at: <http://crl.nmsu.edu/~mleisher/csets.html> <http://crl.nmsu.edu/~mleisher/csets/RISCOS.TXT>

Commercial News

Classic Clipart

APDL/ProAction Software are, by agreement with Sherston Software Limited, bringing their Classic Clipart collection (featuring Split an Image and Christmas Allsorts) to the RISC OS platform. The HTML interface of the original is preserved, but a thumbnail catalogue has been added to the CD-ROM and all graphics are in Draw format.

The price, including a site licence, is GBP9.90. That includes carriage and VAT, and amounts to approximately one third of the current PC/Mac user price.

To get your copy, call APDL on 0208 778 2659, <sales@apdl.co.uk>, or write to: APDL, 39 Knighton Park Road, Sydenham, London SE26 5RN.

Also APDL/ProAction have active development plans for Compo, WimpBasic, Sleuth, and Desktop Repton, and have requested suggestions for how these or other titles can be improved. <http://www.apdl-proaction.co.uk/>

New software summary

  • Basalt, BASic ALTernative keywords
Basalt provides alternative keywords by extending the use of normal keywords and adding new keywords. It is written in hand-crafted assembler and they execute at BASIC speeds, and uses only documented entries to the BASIC module and should be compatible with all versions.

Updated software summary

  • BeebIt v0.53
BBC Micro computer emulator for RISC OS versions 3.00 and above. The following improvements have been done since 0.50: corrected timings of some 65C12 opcodes; improved Master memory bank switching; corrected timing for 1MHz devices; added 6850 ACIA and Serial ULA emulation; added UEF tape image support for uncompressed images; added Tape loading speed option; ROM image files can now be dragged into the required slot of the configure window; cycle counting is now exact; Bolderdash and Hyper Sports decode correctly.

  • CCres v1.03

  • PC Keyboard 2 v2.01

  • VICE v1.12
VICE (Versatile Commodore Emulator) is a portable emulator suite for the 8bit CBM machines C128, C64, CBM2, PET, Plus4 and VIC20. This RISC OS release is 32bit compatible and will therefore run on Risc PC and Iyonix computers, but requires the 32bit Shared C Library.
